The pilot and a passenger in a single-engine plane walked away unhurt from a crash landing Monday near Greenwood Elementary School in McHenry County. Thomas N. Chapman, 62, of Harvard told police he experienced mechanical problems with the Forney F-1A Aircoupe shortly after taking off from Galt Airport near Wonder Lake around 9:30 a.m. and was headed back to the airport with Roch T. Magelby-Lambert, 29, of Cambridge, Mass., when the accident occurred.
In Monday's accident, the airplane hit the front-lawn sign of Greenwood Elementary School, 4618 Greenwood Rd., a half-mile south of the airport at about 9:35 a.m., said Woodstock firefighter Mike Hill. Justina Fibish, 37, was drinking coffee on her patio when she saw the plane come in between a power line and a barbed wire fence, grazing both. "I heard it, then I saw it crash," she said.
"We watch planes come and go all the time, but this one was loud and we knew it was coming in close," she said. The plane skidded sideways and split in two when it hit the school sign support, Fibish said. No one was in the school, authorities said. The pilot "should play the Lotto tonight," said Richard Fibish, 36.
