Weather is a Factor When Choosing a Sign
The devastation by Hurricane Katrina in 2005 cannot and should never be diminished. America's collective memory remains imprinted with all the horror - and heroism that single storm brought about. This, however, is not another story about the wrath of Hurricane Katrina. You see, she had a grandfather. His name was Andrew.
Near the foot of the Florida Keys there are places with charming names like 'Barnes Sound' and 'Biscayne Bay.' Sadly, hurricanes seem to spend a lot time in this area if only to wreak havoc and make names for themselves. Thirteen years to the week before Katrina's blow to Louisiana and Mississippi a hurricane named Andrew paid a most destructive visit to this stretch of land between Miami and Key Largo. Life in southeast Florida would never be the same.
By the numbers, Hurricane Andrew was the costliest pre-Katrina weather disaster in U.S. history. In Florida alone total damage would top twenty-five billion dollars. The post-mortem analysis by the insurance industry revealed that the lion's share of the damage was caused not by water but by wind.
Welcome to Homestead, Florida, where the town slogan is, "We've got the sun and a whole lot more." On August 24th, 1992, they indeed had a whole lot more: Hurricane Andrew's 164 mile-per-hour winds. As if held hostage, Homestead reluctantly played the part of bull's eye for Hurricane Andrew's grim obliteration of the southeastern part of the state. Andrew would be only the century's third Category 5 hurricane.
Lest we forget the human component hurricanes bring, it goes without saying that the loss of twenty-three precious lives is far and away more important than any monetary damage.
Once the storm passed, the people of Miami-Dade and Monroe counties began rebuilding what Andrew had leveled. Amazingly, some man-made structures survived. It is indeed a testament to any person or manufacturing company who builds a structure - any structure - that can withstand the brutality of a Category 5 hurricane. By 1992, Stewart Church Signs had already been building signs of the highest structural integrity for twenty-four years. Many of their signs in the hurricane-torn region were still standing after Andrew.
Modello Baptist Church is a mere four miles from Homestead, Florida. While many commercial signs in the church's vicinity lay broken on the ground post-Andrew, Modello Baptist's Stewart sign was a most welcome sight to storm victims. The church sheltered those in need and became the default meeting place for miles around. And, thanks to Modello Baptist's sign, clean blankets and potable water were effectively distributed by FEMA.
There are many considerations that go into any major purchase. Add another layer of consideration when that item has to function outdoors. Stewart Church Signs, by 1992, had already proven many times over that the signs they manufacture are the signs they stand by, even through Category 5 hurricanes. What is more, due to advances in materials and manufacturing, the sign Stewart builds today surpasses in quality the Stewart product which survived Andrew those many years ago.
No hurricane should come between a church and its family. Since 1968 churches have looked to Stewart Signs for a way out of the storm.
